Food Programs Offer Assistance in Citrus County

The Citrus County Veterans Coalition is offering food assistance to honorably discharged veterans and their surviving spouses. The pantry is open every Tuesday year-round and the first and third Thursdays (except July 1 thru Sept. 1) of every month from 9 a.m. to noon at 1081 N. Paul St. in Inverness. All eligible individuals may collect food items once per month and register during normal opening hours. For those unable to visit during these hours, alternate arrangements can be made by contacting Richard Floyd at 352-400-8952.

In addition to serving local veterans, the Citrus County Veterans Coalition has also voted to offer food benefits to DHS employees affected by the shutdown. These employees can receive supplemental food assistance by showing proof of employment during normal business hours. Significant others of working employees may also collect food once per month. Other food programs in the area include the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church food pantry in Citrus Springs, which can be reached through a new auto-phone system at 352-489-4858, and The Salvation Army food pantry, which operates Monday through Thursday from 9-10:45 a.m. and 1-1:45 p.m. at 712 S. School Ave. in Lecanto.

The Salvation Army also serves hot meals to anyone in need at Daystar, located at 6751 W. Gulf to Lake Highway in Crystal River, every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. and on Wednesday. No documentation is required, and individuals can simply show up to receive a meal or meals for their family.
