Fire Destroys Crystal River Beekeeping Operation, Community Rallies

A fire destroyed a longtime Crystal River beekeeping operation on Monday night, leaving the owner heartbroken but grateful for the community’s support. The fire occurred around 10:30 p.m. on March 18 at 5630 SE 110th St, Crystal River, according to Citrus County Fire Rescue.

The beekeeping operation, owned by 55-year-old David Newman, had been a staple in the Crystal River community for years. Newman, who has been keeping bees for over 20 years, was devastated by the loss but is hopeful that he can rebuild with the help of the community. “It’s a huge loss, but I’m just grateful that no one was hurt,” Newman said. “The outpouring of support from the community has been amazing.”

Citrus County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Newman estimates that he lost around $100,000 worth of equipment and bees. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Newman rebuild his operation.

The community has rallied around Newman, offering support and donations. “It’s heartbreaking to see David go through this, but it’s also inspiring to see the community come together to help him,” said Karen Richardson, a local resident. The Crystal River community is known for its strong support of local businesses and individuals in need.

Newman is planning to rebuild his operation and is hopeful that he can have it up and running again soon. In the meantime, he is grateful for the support of the community and is looking forward to getting back to doing what he loves.
