DOH-Hernando lifts water quality advisory for Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park

The Florida Department of Health in Hernando County has lifted its water quality advisory for Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park at 10800 Pine Island Drive in Spring Hill. Tests completed on Tuesday, March 31, showed acceptable levels of Enterococcus bacteria according to state guidelines.

The advisory was previously issued due to high bacterial levels in the water at the popular Spring Hill park. DOH-Hernando officials announced the lifting of the no-swim advisory after water quality tests indicated the bacterial contamination had returned to safe levels established by Florida health standards.

Enterococcus bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness and skin infections when people swim in contaminated water. The bacteria typically enters waterways through stormwater runoff, sewage overflows, or animal waste. State health officials regularly monitor water quality at public beaches and swimming areas throughout Florida.

Current test results for Alfred McKethan Pine Island Park and other monitored locations are available on the Florida Department of Health’s Healthy Beaches website. Residents can also contact DOH-Hernando at 352-540-6800 or visit Hernando.FloridaHealth.gov for additional information about water quality advisories and public health updates in Hernando County.
