The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) building in Crystal River is nearing reopening after months of repairs following Hurricane Helene. The building, located in Crystal River, Citrus County, Florida, is expected to become the flagship location for DAV operations in the county, consolidating from its current location in Inverness.
The repairs included a new floor installation, a mural project honoring veterans and first responders, and a memorial installation. The mural, designed and painted by artists from The Creative Art Nest, features emblems of various US military branches and honors local, state, and federal first responders and veterans. The interior renovations are being completed by workers, and the building is expected to be ready for use soon. The DAV organization has been operating from temporary space at the George Washington Carver Community Center in Inverness since the flooding.
The city-owned building required additional time for repairs due to flood-damage regulations. City officials had to determine how these regulations applied to the structure and obtained an appraisal to establish the damage extent. The DAV plans to centralize its operations in Crystal River, making it easier for veterans to access services.
The reopening of the DAV building in Crystal River is expected to bring various benefits to the local veteran community. According to Curts, the organization is eager to move into the new location, which will allow them to serve more people and provide services under one roof.
