A long-planned river walk project in Crystal River is nearing completion, but a contentious issue remains: the relocation of a boat ramp currently situated on the Dockside property next to Bird’s Underwater.
The river walk project, which has been in planning for over 40 years, aims to create a waterfront community with a river walk similar to those found in other cities, such as Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Gerry Mulligan is credited with bringing the project to the forefront and securing funding and permissions from waterfront owners. However, the boat ramp, which has been in use for years, must be relocated to complete the project. The current ramp is in poor condition, and its proximity to Highway 19 poses a hazardous situation for boaters and traffic.
Several concerned citizens, including Mulligan, and the local Chamber of Commerce have been searching for alternative sites for the boat ramp. While no new location has been officially announced, the effort to relocate the ramp is underway. The river walk project is expected to enhance the city’s waterfront and provide a scenic area for locals and visitors to enjoy.
