Crystal River Hires New Community Engagement Director

The City of Crystal River has hired a new public information officer and community engagement director, bringing in a communications professional with both journalism and public safety outreach experience. Madeline Scarborough, who has served as community relations specialist for the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office since August 2022, accepted the city’s offer on Tuesday and will begin her new role on May 27.

Scarborough will start at an annual salary of $65,000. “We were blessed to have an excellent pool of qualified candidates apply,” City Manager Audra Curts said in a statement. “Five of those candidates completed interviews last week; an offer was tendered to our top candidate, and our offer was accepted Tuesday.” Curts said Scarborough’s background in communications, public engagement and event planning made her stand out among applicants.

“Our selected candidate is Madeline Scarborough, who has served as community relations specialist for the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office since August 2022,” Curts said. “We are excited to welcome Madeline into the role of community engagement director, her demonstrated skills in writing, video and photography, editing, graphic design, public speaking and event coordination make her a great fit for the position.” In her current role with the Sheriff’s Office, Scarborough serves as a liaison between law enforcement and the public, organizing community events, managing social media campaigns, handling speaking engagements and producing news releases videos and graphics.

Scarborough also holds an FBI-LEEDA Master Public Information Officer certification. The City of Crystal River is located in Citrus County, Florida.
