CoreCivic, a private prison company operating the Citrus County Detention Center, is under fire again. On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the Citrus County Chronicle reported that the company had failed to meet state standards for staffing and inmate care.
The issues were revealed in a recent inspection report by the Florida Department of Corrections. According to the report, CoreCivic was cited for inadequate staffing, including a shortage of certified correctional officers. The company was also found to have failed to provide adequate medical and mental health care to inmates.
The Citrus County Detention Center, located at 1000 West State Road 44, Inverness, Florida, has been operated by CoreCivic since 2001. The company has faced criticism in the past for similar issues, including a 2019 report that found the facility was understaffed and had inadequate medical care.
In response to the recent report, Citrus County Sheriff, Robert D. Breeden, stated that he is working with county officials to address the issues and ensure that the detention center is in compliance with state standards.
