Citrus County Residents’ History with World’s Fairs

In the 20th century, World’s Fairs became a global phenomenon, offering people a glimpse into the future and a chance to explore different foods, customs, and cultures. Citrus County residents were among those who traveled long distances to visit these showcases, discovering attractions and technology that would eventually become a cornerstone of Florida life.

The first World’s Fair in Chicago, also known as the “Columbian Exposition,” took place in 1893. Although Citrus County faced financial challenges and did not officially participate, Florida had a large exhibit. However, the exhibit manager was dismissed due to political unrest. Interestingly, a local woman shared an oral history about her late father, who was adopted in the Chicago area. She had a small cup embossed “World’s Fair 1893” with his first and middle name engraved on the side, which served as her only link to his biological family.

A similar World’s Fair event was planned for St. Louis in 1903-1904 to commemorate the westward journey of Louis and Clark. Florida’s fair manager invited the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) to attend an organizational meeting in Jacksonville. The request was “… considered.”
