Nathan Douglas Holmberg, 36, a man facing multiple counts involving sexual activities with children and possession of child sex abuse material, has died while in custody at the Hillsborough County Jail. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Holmberg was found unresponsive on March 30 and was pronounced dead on April 3 at Tampa General Hospital. The Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the official cause of death, which is suspected to be suicide.
Holmberg was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on March 25 on two counts of lewd or lascivious molestation (victim under 12, defendant over 18) and two counts of promotion of a sexual performance by a child. The charges stemmed from evidence uncovered during a broader investigation that originated in Hernando County. Detectives located evidence on a cellular device tied to Holmberg, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Attorney General’s office were involved in the investigation. Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis and Attorney General James Uthmeier had previously commented on the case, highlighting the importance of bringing perpetrators of child abuse to justice.
Holmberg’s death has brought closure to the community, but also raises questions about the mental health support and suicide prevention measures in place for inmates. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement and the justice system in addressing the needs of individuals in custody.
