A woman was bitten by an alligator while swimming at Hidden Creek Park in Inverness on Saturday afternoon, July 1, around 3:00 PM. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred when the woman, whose name has not been released, entered the water to retrieve a frisbee that had been thrown into the lake.
The alligator, estimated to be around 10 feet long, attacked the woman, causing significant injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Following the incident, the park was closed temporarily as a wildlife trapper was called to the scene to capture the reptile. The area will remain closed until further notice to ensure public safety.
The Hidden Creek Park closure is a precautionary measure to prevent any further incidents while the alligator is being captured and relocated. Residents and visitors are advised to be cautious when in or near bodies of water in Citrus County, as alligators are common in freshwater areas.
Citrus County officials urge everyone to be aware of their surroundings and keep a safe distance from wildlife. If you encounter an alligator, do not approach it. Instead, contact a wildlife professional or local authorities immediately.
