On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the Weeki Wachee Hornets (12-10) defeated the Central Bears (4-21) in a 14-4 drubbing in the district semifinals at Weeki Wachee High School in Weeki Wachee, Florida. The Hornets’ Head Coach, Patrick McHugh, likened the matchup to a roller coaster after an up-and-down pair of opening frames gave way to an avalanche of Weeki scores in the later innings.
“It was a bit of a roller coaster there,” Coach McHugh said. “Had a good bottom of the firstタ Then, chaos happened in the second.” The Hornets scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, followed by four runs for the Bears in the top of the second. However, the Hornets dominated the remaining innings, scoring 10 more runs to secure the 14-4 victory in five innings.
The Hornets’ win advances them to the next round of the district playoffs. The team’s performance was led by strong plays from players including Jake Garrett, 18, Saul Melendez, 28, JD Sammons, 12, Aaron Bingnear, 1, Christian Zahora, 23, Julyan Matos, 3, and Brayton Crews, 11.
