A recent statement by a former US President has sparked concerns over the country’s foreign policy and its impact on allies. Michael Corleone’s famous line from “The Godfather Part II,” “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer,” resonates well in today’s world. However, Trump’s “America First” policy has raised eyebrows, particularly with regards to NATO allies.
Trump has had mixed opinions of his NATO allies over the past year, ranging from indifference to hostility. His latest remarks suggest finding ways to punish allies who refused to back the Iran war. His recent spat with Germany could mean 5,000 U.S. troops will be removed from Germany. Tensions between the U.S. and its allies were already heightened by tariff threats. Even earlier, the U.S. pressured Ukraine to make concessions to Russia for a peace deal. Who can forget the push to take Greenland from Denmark, a NATO ally? During his first term, Trump threatened to leave NATO. In his second term, he first cut U.S. bilateral assistance to Ukraine. This left our allies to fend for themselves against Putin’s army. Later, aid to Ukraine was resumed.
