Tropical Storm Isaias Threatens Crystal River Area With Up to 3 Feet of Storm Surge

Citrus County emergency management officials are warning residents that Tropical Storm Isaias could bring 1 to 3 feet of storm surge to the Crystal River area on Friday, posing a significant flood threat to low-lying coastal communities along the Nature Coast.

The storm surge threat is the primary concern for Citrus County, where areas near the Gulf of Mexico, including Crystal River and Inverness-area waterways, are most vulnerable to inundation. Residents in surge zones are urged to monitor official forecasts closely and follow any evacuation orders issued by Citrus County Emergency Management.

Storm surge occurs when powerful winds push ocean water inland, flooding coastal streets and properties well beyond normal tide levels. Even 1 to 2 feet of surge can make roads impassable and cause significant property damage, particularly in the low-elevation neighborhoods common throughout Citrus County. Officials stress that surge flooding can arrive quickly and cut off escape routes if residents wait too long to leave.

Citrus County residents can track the storm and find emergency preparedness resources through the Citrus County Emergency Management office. The National Hurricane Center is providing continuous updates on Isaias’s track and intensity as the storm approaches Florida. Residents should also review their evacuation zone status and have a plan in place before conditions deteriorate Friday.
