The Sun-Journal’s bicentennial edition, published in 1976, was placed in a time capsule and recently surfaced, offering a glimpse into the past. The front page features Nick Conner, a state senator for Florida’s 9th district from 1955 to 1965, who led a parade. Conner was a business fuel oil distributor and rancher who passed away in 1995 in Hernando County.
The newspaper, which will emerge from the time capsule yellowed and brittle with age, showcases the vibrant life of the community at that time, including its people, events, and need for accurate and fair coverage. Craig Davis, who worked for The Sun-Journal at the time, sent a photo of the bicentennial edition. Davis recalled writing about the Bicentennial, saying, “I must have written a thousand stories that year about the Bicentennial. Got so I could write the words in my sleep.” The goal of including the newspaper in the time capsule is to provide future generations with a glimpse into the past, highlighting major stories and events that might otherwise be forgotten.
