The once-busy Ridge Manor Golf and Country Club clubhouse, a neighborhood landmark since 1959, was demolished recently in eastern Hernando County. The 7665-sq. ft. building, which housed a clubhouse, pro shop, and restaurant, was reduced to rubble, leaving behind only memories of its vibrant past.
J. Earl Miller, a real estate developer from Ohio, developed Ridge Manor as a “dream community” in the early 1950s. He acquired 1,000 acres of land near the intersection of US 301 and Hwy 50 in 1953, and an additional 2,700 acres along the Withlacoochee River in 1955. Miller hired German-born Hans Schmeisser to design an 18-hole golf course, which opened in 1956. By the late 1950s, Ridge Manor had over 200 houses, paved roads, a new water system, and the golf course. The clubhouse was a central part of the community until its demolition.
The Ridge Manor community was Miller’s only Florida venture, and he died unexpectedly in June 1960. The neighborhood has undergone significant changes since its heyday in the 1960s and 1980s, with many new homes and developments. The demolition of the clubhouse marks the end of an era for long-time residents who have fond memories of the community centerpiece.
