Pasco County Commissioners considered adding a 12-month pause on AI data center projects at their first reading of the moratorium on Tuesday.
The proposed moratorium, which would last for 12 months, aims to give the county time to assess the impact of these projects on the area. The commissioners will hold a second reading of the moratorium at a later date, which is expected to take place on January 23, 2024, at 3:00 PM at the Pasco County Commission Chambers, 8731 Citizens Drive, New Port Richey.
The Pasco County Planning and Zoning Department has been working with local residents and businesses to address concerns about the rapid growth of AI data centers in the area. Some residents have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the environment, traffic, and property values.
The county has seen a surge in AI data center projects in recent months, with several new facilities being proposed or built in the area. According to county officials, there are currently over 10 AI data center projects in various stages of development in Pasco County.
Commissioner Kelly stated that the moratorium would give the county time to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of these projects and develop a comprehensive plan for regulating them.
Residents can provide input on the proposed moratorium by attending the second reading on January 23, 2024, or by submitting comments online through the Pasco County website.
