The Hernando County School Board has two seats up for election in the August 18 Primary. Incumbent Shannon Rodriguez faces challenger Luciano Vignali in District 3, while incumbent Mark Johnson faces challenger Dana Lynne Pearce in District 1.
Shannon Rodriguez, a wife, mother of four, and business owner, was first elected to the school board in 2022. She championed expanding career and technical education (CTE) opportunities, strengthening the district, increasing career pathways, improving school safety, and expanding early learning opportunities. If re-elected, she plans to continue working to increase teacher salaries, expand CTE, improve academic achievement, and ensure parents remain informed and involved in their children’s education.
Mark Johnson, who has lived in Spring Hill for 20 years, owns a private investigation agency. He successfully removed Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs from the district, saving over $100,000 annually. He believes school choice is helpful, keeping schools competitive and expanding educational opportunities. Johnson also plans to reduce paperwork burden on teachers to improve retention.
The candidates’ stances on school choice and teacher retention are critical issues in the election. Rodriguez believes parents deserve options and the district should provide excellent teachers, safe schools, and strong academics. Johnson thinks school choice alleviates burdens caused by the influx of people in Hernando County.
