The Hernando Leopards flag football team rode a strong first half and a pair of interceptions to a 19-6 victory over the Weeki Wachee Hornets at Tom Fisher Stadium on Tuesday, securing their first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) championship. Hernando Flag Football Head Coach Tyson Ellis expressed his excitement about the win, saying, “We are excited. That is the first time we won the county championship… We played against a well-coached team in Weeki Wachee, and it is hard to beat a team twice…”
The Leopards’ Kenderlyn Hart scored a touchdown on an interception return of nearly 50 yards. Junior Alexis Sway had a standout game with ten pulls on defense, including a sack, and several receptions on offense, including a 21-yard touchdown grab. Coach Ellis noted that Sway’s absence in their previous game against Land O’ Lakes was a significant factor in their loss.
The win marks a significant achievement for the Hernando Leopards, who have demonstrated their strength and teamwork throughout the season. The team’s victory over Weeki Wachee showcases their determination and skill in the sport.
