At just 14 years old, Dragomir Mijic found himself navigating through Budapest to catch a flight to the United States. With airports in his native Serbia shut down amid political unrest, his parents pooled their limited money to send him away from uncertainty and toward the possibility of a better future.
Today, that same boy, who grew up in a multi-generational home with dirt floors, is now one of Florida’s leading orthopedic surgeons. Mijic grew up in a small Serbian village of about 2,000 people, sharing a 1,000-square-foot home with three generations of his family, his grandparents, parents, sister and aunt. His childhood unfolded against the backdrop of the Kosovo War, a violent conflict between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, led by Serbian President Slobodan Milošević, and the Kosovo Liberation Army, which ultimately ended after a 78-day NATO military intervention.
After leaving Serbia, Mijic was matched with a host family in Stillwater, Minnesota, where he began life as a foreign exchange student. The transition was jarring. He arrived with limited English and little familiarity with the culture he was stepping into. He enrolled in one of Minnesota’s largest high schools with roughly 3,000 to 4,000 students, determined to find his place. He quickly pushed himself to adapt, joining school clubs and the high school wrestling team to connect and find his footing.
Although the foreign exchange program was meant to last just one year, Mijic made up his mind early on that he wanted to stay. In the United States, he saw something he hadn’t known before: stability, opportunity and the chance to build a future not defined by conflict. “I felt this was a safe and stable environment that really valued hard work above all else, and that if you put your mind to it, you can become whoever you want to be with enough effort,” Mijic said.
After deciding to build his future in the United States, Mijic set out on the demanding path of higher education. He began at a community college, worked hard, and eventually earned his medical degree. Now, as a respected orthopedic surgeon in Florida, Mijic is living proof that with determination and hard work, anyone can achieve their dreams, no matter where they come from.
