April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and its Florida Highway Patrol division are encouraging drivers to put down their devices and focus on the road. A crash occurs every 44 seconds in Florida, and one in seven involves a distracted driver. Distracted driving includes anything that takes a driver’s hands off the wheel, eyes off the road or mind off driving – including passengers. Last year, more than 52,900 crashes in Florida were caused by distracted driving, resulting in more than 2,100 serious injuries and more than 300 fatalities, the most since 2021.
In Hernando County, the local government and law enforcement agencies are joining the effort to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. The Hernando County Commission is also seeking volunteers to fill several advisory board positions, including four seats on the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee for citizens engaged in banking or mortgage banking, essential services, for-profit affordable housing, and non-profit housing. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity Tampa Bay Gulfside is celebrating a milestone as CEO Mike Sutton marks 12 years of leadership with the affiliate. The board of directors has secured a long-term employment agreement with Sutton, ensuring his leadership for the next six years.
