Fast start lifts Sharks over Falcons

HUDSON – An uneven season produced a dead even record for the Nature Coast flag football team through the first half of the schedule. But the Sharks hope they’ve built some positive momentum, collecting their third consecutive victory and second in the first week after spring break as they rolled past host Fivay 34-7 on Thursday, March 26.

“I came in with the goal of getting girls playing time and working on stuff we needed to work on. Ultimately I feel like I accomplished that goal and I feel like as a team we accomplished that goal,” Nature Coast head coach Ian Wald said. “We got to get girls experience in positions they needed experience in. We got to work on some plays and get it on film for us to be able to see a little bit better. So I’m super happy about that. “Some of the execution was lacking on some things and there’s a handful of plays I could have run over and over and over again and had some more success. But that’s not what I wanted. I wanted to be able to respect Fivay and treat it like an opportunity for us to learn more about ourselves. So I did that through experimenting with different plays, I wanted to see how they worked. Ultimately I’m happy.” This came one night after the Sharks (6-4) downed another Pasco County team, beating Mitchell 26-21.

“We had a hard, front-loaded schedule before spring break and we knew that was going to be the case. We didn’t pull out some of the wins that we wanted to, some of the more challenging ones. So we were sitting there at .500,” Wald said. “But we knew the back half of our schedule was a little more manageable and we’ve made a lot of corrections as a coaching staff to get these girls moving in the right direction. So all three of us (coaches) are thrilled that we’ve got two wins this week. It’s our first week this season that we won both games in the same week.” The coaching staff was afforded the opportunity to tinker thanks to a quick start versus the host Falcons (4-6). The Sharks marched right down the field.
