Crystal River Resident Opposes Dairy Industry Push to Restrict Plant-Based Milk Labeling

Cecil Casterelli of Crystal River voiced opposition to renewed efforts by the dairy industry to restrict plant-based products from using the word “milk” in their labeling, calling the push an attempt to shield one industry from growing competition. The debate has gained traction again despite little evidence that consumers are confused by current labeling practices, according to a Reuters report from April 24, 2026.

Casterelli argued that most consumers understand exactly what products like oat milk are and choose them intentionally for health, environmental, or ethical reasons. He expressed concern that limiting how products are described doesn’t protect the public but instead restricts innovation and access to alternatives many people prefer.

The Crystal River resident warned that if the dairy lobby succeeds in their current efforts, consumers might soon face additional restrictions on familiar product names. He suggested that products like peanut butter could be forced to rebrand as “peanut spread” under similar regulatory pressure.

The ongoing debate highlights tensions between traditional dairy producers and the growing plant-based alternatives market. Consumer advocacy groups have consistently argued that clear labeling and diverse choices benefit shoppers, while dairy industry representatives maintain that traditional terminology should be protected to prevent market confusion.
