Citrus County’s Twistid Arts Initiative Earns Praise for Immersive Halloween Production ‘The Cursed’

Twistid Arts Initiative wrapped up its Halloween production of “The Cursed” at its black box theater at 208 W. Highland Blvd. in Inverness, drawing praise for an entirely locally created show featuring Citrus County writers, choreographers, dancers, and performers. The production, written by local playwright Gabi Young, connected to last year’s TAI show and is already planned to continue with another installment next Halloween.

The immersive experience, directed by Danny Belden, placed audiences inside a “village” with specific boundaries to maintain the atmosphere. Teri Gilbert delivered a standout performance as Elara opposite Matthew Taylor’s portrayal of Hazor, with reports indicating this was Gilbert’s first dramatic role. Her choreography for the production was equally impressive, drawing on performers from her TNT Dance Factory, many of whom have appeared in previous TAI productions and shown remarkable growth over time.

The production was a true family affair. Teri Gilbert’s husband, Tim Gilbert, performed as the “Spirit of the Book” on stilts, while their young daughter, Teagan Gilbert, played the character Lucia. The Belden family also brought deep commitment to the show, with Elisha and Danny Belden driving TAI’s broader mission of raising awareness and expanding access to visual and performing arts through innovative programming, hands-on education, and immersive community events.

TAI continues to establish itself as a cultural anchor in Citrus County, offering residents professional-quality theater experiences produced entirely by local talent. The organization’s black box theater on West Highland Boulevard in Inverness serves as the hub for its programming.
