Citrus County commissioners are considering a moratorium on data centers in the area. The proposal comes as concerns grow over the impact of these large facilities on the environment and local infrastructure.
The Citrus County Chronicle reports that the proposal for a moratorium was brought forward by Commissioner Janet Buck.
According to Buck, data centers require large amounts of water and energy to operate, which can strain local resources. She also expressed concerns about the aesthetic impact of these facilities, saying they can be "industrial-looking" and may not fit in with the county’s rural character.
The county is set to discuss the proposal on Monday night at the Citrus County Board of Commissioners meeting, which will take place at 3:00 PM at the Citrus County Government Center, 405 SE 1st St, Inverness, FL 34470.
Commissioners will weigh the potential benefits of data centers, including job creation and economic growth, against the potential drawbacks. If approved, the moratorium would give the county time to develop regulations and guidelines for data center development.
