Citrus County to Consider Renaming Pirates Cove

The Citrus County Board of Commissioners will consider renaming Pirates Cove at its meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at 9:00 AM, in the Citrus County Historic Courthouse, 1 Court St, Inverness, FL 34470.

The agenda item, submitted by Commissioner Mike Johnson, requests that staff research and provide information on the renaming of Pirates Cove, which is located on the Gulf of Mexico in Crystal River. According to Johnson, the name “Pirates Cove” may not be suitable for the area, as it could be perceived as promoting or glorifying piracy.

No specific names have been proposed to replace Pirates Cove, but Commissioner Johnson said he would like to explore options that reflect the area’s natural beauty and family-friendly atmosphere. The Board’s decision will be based on input from residents, business owners, and other stakeholders.

Commissioner Johnson stated that “The name Pirates Cove might not be fitting for our community, and we should consider alternatives that better represent our values and environment.” The Board’s discussion and potential vote on the renaming of Pirates Cove will be open to the public.
