BASICS United is collecting summer heat essentials to give to people in need in Citrus County. The Hot Weather Protection Drive started on June 1 and will run until June 30. Citizens can drop off donations of new, unwrapped items such as water, sunscreen, hats, and cooling towels at the BASICS United office located at 810 S. Ponce de Leon Blvd., Crystal River.
The organization is focusing on collecting items that will help keep people cool and protected from the heat. “We want to make sure that everyone in our community has access to the resources they need to stay safe during the hot summer months,” said a spokesperson for BASICS United. The collected items will be distributed to local shelters, food banks, and other organizations that serve people in need.
Citizens can also donate financially to support the drive. All donations will go towards purchasing additional items to support those in need. For more information about the Hot Weather Protection Drive or to make a financial donation, visit the BASICS United website or call them at (352) 795-6100.
Some of the most needed items include:
- Water (bottled or cases)
- Sunscreen
- Hats
- Cooling towels
- Lightweight, light-colored clothing
Residents can also contact BASICS United for pickup of large donations. This initiative aims to provide relief to those struggling with the heat, especially vulnerable populations such as the elderly and homeless.
