Annual Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida Passes Through Citrus County

The 43rd Annual Florida Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Florida took place in Citrus County in April, carrying the “Flame of Hope” through Crystal River and Inverness. Law enforcement officers, Key Training Center clients, Special Olympics athletes, and community supporters participated in the local leg of the relay, which spans hundreds of miles across Florida each year.

The event, coordinated by local organizers Thomas Beagan and Jessica Gallant of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, began with participants marching through downtown Inverness. The day’s final stretch gathered at a Publix in Inverness, where participants paused before completing a one-mile walk to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office operations center. Along the route, participants stopped to interact and connect with Special Olympics Florida ambassador Ashley, who introduced them to Lenard Kemp, Area 5 manager of sports training and competition.

During the event, participants had the opportunity to learn about opportunities in triathlons, swimming, and other events. Community partners supported the event throughout the day, with Publix locations in Inverness and Crystal River providing refreshments for runners and walkers. Ginny Crider proudly held the Flame of Hope just before it continued toward downtown Inverness.
