A Healthier Future Takes Planning in Citrus County

Citrus County, Florida – A recent community health-needs assessment has identified ongoing health concerns in the area, including heart disease and cancer as leading causes of death, limited access to healthcare due to a lack of providers, and challenges related to transportation and employment. These findings align with previous assessments, highlighting the need for continued planning and collaboration to address these issues.

The assessment’s results have prompted local healthcare providers, such as Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in Crystal River and HCA Citrus Hospital in Inverness, to take proactive steps in addressing these concerns. TGH is supporting the Citrus County School System’s Academy of Health Careers program by offering scholarships and employment opportunities to high school students. Additionally, TGH is preparing to staff its new care facility behind the stand-alone emergency department on Route 486 before its construction is completed. HCA Citrus has also been operating an internal medicine residency program and a specialty fellowship program, aiming to attract and retain physicians in the area.

The Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) partnership, coordinated by the Florida Department of Health – Citrus County, brings together representatives from government, nonprofit organizations, and the community to focus on areas highlighted by the health assessments, including access to care, behavioral health/substance abuse, and health communications. Those interested in joining the partnership or committees can contact the Florida Department of Health – Citrus County.

Many families in Citrus County fall into the ALICE (asset-limited, income-constrained, employed) category, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to create a healthier community. By working together, local organizations and residents can help address these challenges and improve the overall well-being of Citrus County residents.
