4 Citrus County Prison Employees Indicted in Scheme to Bring Drugs, Cell Phones to Inmates

On Monday, U.S. Attorney Greg Kehoe announced that four Citrus County prison employees, one former employee, two inmates, and the mother of an inmate have been indicted in a scheme to bring cell phones and drugs into the facility in exchange for money. The indictments were unsealed on Monday, revealing that the eight individuals were involved in the scheme.

The indicted individuals include four current and former Citrus County prison employees, who allegedly smuggled cell phones and drugs into the prison in exchange for money. The scheme involved two inmates and the mother of one of the inmates. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not release the names of the indicted individuals, but announced that they face charges related to the scheme.

The Citrus County Detention Center, located at 802 W. Treece St., Inverness, Florida, is where the alleged scheme took place. The center is operated by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the investigation is ongoing, and more indictments may be forthcoming.

The charges against the indicted individuals include conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery, and introducing contraband into a detention facility. If convicted, the individuals face significant prison time and fines. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General, and the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office.
