Weeki Wachee Hornets Shut Out Central Bears 6-0

On Thursday night, the Weeki Wachee Hornets baseball team defeated the Central Bears 6-0 at the Hornets’ Nest in Weeki Wachee, completing a two-game sweep and moving to 5-1 on the season.

The Hornets’ sophomore starting pitcher, Aaron Bingnear, tossed a complete game, giving up just three hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out four. Bingnear pitched out of two jams, inducing a double-play grounder to short in the top of the fourth inning and getting the final out on a pop-up to second base in the fifth.

“We were a little lackadaisical in a couple aspects of the game,” Weeki Wachee head coach Pat McHugh said. “Defensively, there were miscues. Offensively, we were trying to force ourselves into bad situations.” However, McHugh praised Bingnear’s performance, saying, “He’s a guy who’s going to attack the zone. He’s going to sit there and throw three pitches for strikes and he’s going to put hitters in tough situations.”

The Hornets struggled early at the plate but heated up in the late innings to support Bingnear’s strong pitching. “Just went out there and did my job for my boys,” Bingnear said. “We came out slow on offense, so we just had to battle on defense. Doing my job, pitch the ball in the strike zone and just compete.”
