Hernando County, Florida – A man accused of causing a series of hit-and-run crashes on February 12 is in custody, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash at Commercial Way and Hexam Road in Royal Highlands. While Fire Rescue and deputies were on scene, a second report came in of a man driving a red Chevrolet Tahoe who had struck multiple vehicles on the road and in a parking lot near Sunshine Grove Road and Jacqueline Road.
The suspect, identified as Chad Michael Lafleur, 46, was apprehended by members of the Traffic Unit just blocks from the scene. He was taken into custody without incident. Deputies said they suspected he was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crashes. Lafleur was charged with DUI with bodily injury, refusal to submit to a blood, breath or urine test, and leaving the scene of a crash with injury. Bond was set at $11,000. One injured driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out on February 19 in the 13000 block of Kanawha Drive, Hernando County Fire Rescue said. Crews from Station 13 arrived about 3:30 p.m. to find multiple vehicles ablaze, with additional vehicles nearby. Seven vehicles were damaged, including two that were a total loss.
