The Florida Department of Education has revoked scholarship funding for Trinity Catholic School in Crystal River, effective immediately, after reviewing the founder’s past conviction. The school’s founder, James D. Martin, was convicted of grand theft in 2002.
In a letter sent to the school on January 10, 2023, the department stated that Martin’s conviction was a disqualifying factor for the school’s participation in the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship (FTC) program. The program provides scholarships to students attending private schools, including Trinity Catholic.
The Citrus County Chronicle reported that the department’s review of Martin’s conviction was prompted by a complaint filed in 2022. The school has been accepting scholarship students since 2014.
According to the school’s website, Trinity Catholic School is located at 4205 S. Pine Ave, Crystal River, FL 34475. The school serves students in grades K-12 and has approximately 200 students enrolled.
The revocation of scholarship funding may impact the school’s ability to provide financial assistance to its students. Parents and students are advised to contact the school directly for more information.
