Springstead Wrestling Sends Four to States, Softball Continues Dominance

Springstead High School’s wrestling team ended up fifth overall at the Region 2A-2 meet held last Friday and Saturday at Brandon High, totaling 96 points. Four of the team’s wrestlers finished in the top four of their weight classes to earn a spot at the Class 2A Individual Bracketed Tournament (IBT) State Championship meet this coming Thursday through Saturday at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

Senior James Garrett earned an individual regional title, placing first at 175 pounds. He pinned Sebring’s Briar Dennis (27 seconds) and Edgewater’s Nicolas Cook (2:10) before taking a 7-2 decision over Lake Gibson’s Paul Wright in the semifinals. In the final, he defeated top seed Andrew Bray of Zephyrhills 4-2. Kaleb Johns reached the final at 215 but lost 4-1 to Lake Gibson’s Jeremiah Chavis. Giovani DeLape placed third at 132, as did Daniel Quinones at 157.

In softball, Springstead continued its dominating start to the season, rolling to an 11-0 victory in its only game of the week against Hernando on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Alivia Miller was nearly untouchable on the mound, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out 10 in five innings. The Eagles (4-0) have outscored their opponents a combined 43-0.

The team’s softball success and the quartet of wrestlers heading to states demonstrate the school’s strong athletic programs. The community is proud of these students’ achievements, showcasing their hard work and dedication.
