Brooksville, FL – The Springstead Eagles baseball team secured their third consecutive win on Friday night, defeating host Central 7-2. Pitchers Jacob Giannie and Matthew Opolski-Roe combined for a four-hitter, striking out 15 batters.
The Eagles, led by coach Brett Baudendistel, have been rebuilding after a turbulent offseason and a rough start to the season. The team has only one senior and starts three freshmen. Despite the challenges, they have shown significant progress, with Giannie and Opolski-Roe leading the charge. Giannie, a junior right-hander, carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, picking up his first win of the season. He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and striking out 11 before reaching his pitch count limit.
The win is a significant step forward for the team, which has faced several setbacks, including the departure of standout shortstop Nathaniel Sabino and several other projected starters. Baudendistel, who was hired just before the start of the season, acknowledged the team’s early struggles but expressed optimism about their progress.
The Eagles’ offense also played a crucial role in the win, pounding out seven hits against Central. With this victory, the team improves their record to 4-6. Central, on the other hand, falls to 1-10.
