A retired Air Force colonel is seeking to rename the county boat ramp in Citrus County after Lt. James Izard, a local hero. The proposal was made to honor Izard’s service and sacrifice.
Retired Col. James R. McGovern, a Citrus County resident, submitted a request to the Citrus County Board of Commissioners to rename the boat ramp located at 1000 North Westshore Drive, Inverness, in honor of Lt. James Izard. Izard, a native of Citrus County, served in the US Navy and was a pilot during World War II. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during a mission in 1943.
In a separate incident, authorities reported that dozens of animals were found dead due to neglect at a Floral City residence. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said that the owner of the property, 54-year-old Karen Sue Johnson, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty. Deputies responded to a call on January 10, 2023, at 1531 SE 4th Ave, Floral City, and found numerous dead animals on the property.
The Citrus County Chronicle reported that Johnson was taken into custody and later released on bail. The investigation is ongoing.
