Red Sand Project Raises Human Trafficking Awareness in Brooksville

Community members gathered at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Brooksville on January 21 to participate in the Red Sand Project, filling cracks in the parking lot with red sand to raise awareness about human trafficking victims. Janine Kell, the center’s director, led the event during Human Trafficking Awareness Month, emphasizing the need to reject stereotypes about who can become a trafficking victim.

The symbolic act of filling cracks with red sand represents how vulnerable people can fall through the cracks in society and become victims of human trafficking. Hernando County Commission Chairman Jerry Campbell joined Kell and other participants in the awareness event, which aimed to educate the community about the realities of human trafficking beyond common misconceptions.

The Red Sand Project is a participatory artwork created by artist Molly Gochman that uses red sand as a visual metaphor for the millions of people who fall through the cracks and become victims of modern slavery. Participants pour red sand into sidewalk cracks, creating a temporary installation that sparks conversations about human trafficking and social justice issues.

The Children’s Advocacy Center serves as a crucial resource for child victims in Hernando County, providing support services and advocacy for those who have experienced abuse or exploitation. The January 21 event highlighted the center’s commitment to raising awareness about all forms of child exploitation, including human trafficking, which affects millions of people worldwide.

Human Trafficking Awareness Month, observed each January, provides an opportunity for communities to learn about the signs of trafficking and how to report suspected cases. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that trafficking victims can be found in various industries and come from all backgrounds, making community awareness efforts like the Red Sand Project essential for prevention and identification.
