In a heartfelt tribute to the men and women of Hernando County Fire Rescue, a family has created handcrafted quilts made from fire rescue shirts to honor their memory and service. Sara-Jean Wilcox and her mother, Nellie Wilcox, first became connected with HCFR Station 7 in 2001 during Sara-Jean’s battle with cancer. The family would often pass along Tampa Bay Rays tickets to the firefighters at Station 7, planting the seeds of a lasting bond.
Years later, Sara-Jean joined Hernando County Fire Rescue as a dispatcher, deepening her connection with the crews. The family suffered a heartbreaking loss on September 27, 2021, with the passing of beloved firefighter Mark Dempsey. Nellie Wilcox began creating the quilts to honor Mark’s memory and the brotherhood he cherished. After Nellie suffered a stroke in December 2021, she remained determined to finish what she had started. With strength and perseverance, she completed the quilts. On February 21, 2026, surrounded by Mark’s family and friends, the quilts were presented at Station 7 in a moving tribute filled with remembrance, gratitude, and love. The following day, February 22, 2026, Sara-Jean and Nellie continued their mission by delivering a quilt to every fire station in the county.
The quilts serve as a tribute to the firefighters who worked alongside Mark and meant so much to him. The presentation of the quilts was a celebration of Mark’s life and the spirit of brotherhood he embodied. The Hernando County Fire Rescue family will continue to cherish the quilts as a reminder of the impact Mark had on their lives.
