Pasco schools to ramp up advanced classes districtwide

Pasco County Schools Superintendent Dr. John Legg wants to make sure all district students get exposed to accelerated academic options. The goal is to help graduates go further in both college and the workforce.

The district plans to expand its gifted and advanced coursework offerings to begin in the fall. All high school juniors and seniors who have never taken accelerated courses will be scheduled into a dual enrollment course called Journey to Success. This course will be made available on each high school campus, in conjunction with Pasco-Hernando State College, with particular attention paid to teens with a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher.

The district also will add to its dual enrollment opportunities with the University of South Florida, offer the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education, or AICE, Thinking Skills course as an elective at all high schools, and convert the Psychology 2 course into an Advanced Placement or AICE model. At middle schools, the plan includes adding more accelerated courses.

The push for more advanced classes is part of a larger effort to challenge students and prepare them for success after high school. According to Dr. Legg, once students see they’re up to the test, many will take further strides in their education after high school, whether pursuing a degree or job training.
