The Crystal River High School Panthers’ impressive run in the state semifinals came to an end, but that’s not the only news surrounding the school. On a separate note, the state has revoked scholarship funding for the Crystal River Christian Academy, a private school in Citrus County, after a review of its founder’s past conviction.
The Panthers, led by their coach, finished their season with a loss in the state semifinals on Friday, March 15, at 7:00 PM, at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Leesburg. The team’s season concluded with an overall record of 12-2. Meanwhile, the Crystal River Christian Academy, founded by John R. Butler, had been receiving state-funded scholarships for its students. However, after a review of Butler’s past conviction, the state decided to revoke the funding. According to records, Butler was convicted of a felony in 2007. The school is located at 8515 NE 14th St, Crystal River, FL 34429.
The decision to revoke the scholarship funding was made on Wednesday, March 13, by the Florida Department of Education. The department stated that the founder’s past conviction made him ineligible to participate in the state’s scholarship program. The Crystal River Christian Academy will no longer receive state funding for its students, affecting the education of its students who rely on these scholarships.
The Citrus County School District and local community have been supportive of the Panthers throughout their playoff run. The district, located at 1301 SE 1st Ave, Crystal River, FL 34429, has provided resources and encouragement to the team. The community’s support for the Panthers and the Crystal River Christian Academy’s students will likely continue, despite the setback with the scholarship funding.
