New Port Richey tackles ‘severe deterioration’ in sewer lines

New Port Richey, Florida – The city of New Port Richey is addressing aging infrastructure by rehabilitating some of its gravity mains, which are sewer pipes that rely on gravity to move wastewater through the system. At the March 17 City Council meeting, members approved an agreement with Inliner Solutions LLC in an amount not to exceed $174,000 to rehabilitate some of the city’s gravity mains.

The rehabilitation project will address aging infrastructure in four areas , east of Madison Street along parts of Oak Ridge Avenue and Monroe Street; in a southeast portion of the city along Spring Flower Drive; near the Cotee River along parts of Cotee River Drive and Cedar Lane; and just north of Orange Lake and Sims Park. Inspections of pipes in these areas have revealed severe deterioration , cracking, infiltration of water and sand, and root intrusion, according to Public Works Director Colin Eichenmuller. For this project, 2,702 linear feet of 8-inch and 10-inch cured-in-place pipe will be installed , creating a new pipe within the existing one by accessing it through manholes, applying an epoxy or resin lining, and curing it with vapor steam.

The city opted for this pipe-within-a-pipe fix to avoid ripping up roads and to lower costs while minimizing disruptions to the public. “It reduces the time we have to spend out in the roadway, shutting down the roadway, ripping up the pipe and replacing it, and disrupting the flow of traffic for our residents,” Eichenmuller said. There are currently just over 83 miles of sanitary sewer lines that the city maintains.

The result of the rehabilitation project is expected to last more than 50 years. The city’s ongoing effort to address aging infrastructure is crucial to maintaining the health and safety of its residents. For more information on the project, residents can visit the city’s website or contact the Public Works Department.
