New Animal Shelter Considered for Citrus County

Citrus County may finally get a new animal shelter. According to a report by the Citrus County Chronicle, the county is considering a new facility to replace the current shelter.

The current shelter has been a topic of discussion for many years, with concerns about its conditions and capacity. In 2020, the Citrus County Animal Shelter had over 1,500 animals come through its doors, with many being euthanized due to overcrowding. The proposed new shelter would aim to address these issues and provide better care for the animals.

The idea of a new shelter has been discussed for several years, with various proposals and plans being presented. In January 2022, the Citrus County Board of Commissioners approved a study to explore the feasibility of building a new shelter. The study is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, with a potential site for the new shelter already identified.

The proposed shelter would be located on 5 acres of land on South Highway 44, near the intersection with West State Road 44. The estimated cost of the project is $2.5 million, which would be funded through a combination of county funds and grants. The new shelter would have a capacity for 200 animals, with state-of-the-art facilities and improved adoption programs.

The Citrus County Animal Shelter is currently located at 3100 W. State Road 44, Inverness, FL 34475. The shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
