The Nature Coast boys track and field team took first place at the annual Kiwanis Invitational on Wednesday, March 12, at Hernando High in Brooksville, scoring 249.5 points, well ahead of Armwood in second with 182.5 points. Hernando High finished third with 63 points, Weeki Wachee was sixth with 28 points, and Central was seventh with 11 points.
Jasir Harvin won the 100 meters in a time of 10.99, Zayden McKenzie took the 200 meters in 22.88, and Dominic Picareillo won the 400 meters in 49.99. In distance runs, Kason Oneill took the 800 meters in 2:03.41, and Noah Carpenter won the 3,200 meters in 10:09.44. The Sharks also won the 4×100 relay with a time of 42.13 and the 4×800 relay in 8:46.85. In field events, Dashawn Allen won the high jump at 6’1 1/2”, Trent Montgomery took the long jump with a 21’2” jump, Aveion Jackson won the triple jump with a 41’1/2” jump, and Joseph Lizor took the javelin with a throw of 164’4”. The Nature Coast girls team came in second with 123 points, behind Armwood’s 192 points. Hernando High was fourth with 75 points, Central was fifth with 37 points, and Weeki Wachee was seventh with 19 points.
Kinsley Peters won the 100 hurdles for the Sharks with a time of 18.03 and also took the long jump with a 16’3” leap. Savannah Inmon, Gabriella Turner, Naylani Morning, and Tristani Kelly teamed up to win the 4×400 relay in 5:01.67. The host Leopards got a first-place finish from Jeremiah Brown in the boys 110 hurdles with a time of 17.60 and Madison McRae in the girls javelin with a throw of 69’6”. In other local news, Springstead’s Lainee Mercer ran a 5:06.80 to take the girls 1,600 at the Freedom Spring Break Invitational on Saturday at Freedom High in Tampa, leading the Eagles to a third-place finish with 51.5 points in the girls team standings.
In softball, Springstead improved to 8-1 with a pair of wins, starting with an 8-1 victory at Nature Coast on Tuesday, March 10.
