The Inverness City Council will hear an update on Tuesday, March 3, at 5:30 pm, on a proposed senior housing community, Longwood Gardens, that has moved closer to reality after clearing a key hurdle in the state’s competitive tax credit process.
The Longwood Gardens project, planned by Green Mills Group, aims to bring 92 attainable rental homes for residents aged 55 and older to a 6.5-acre site at 500 Longwood Ave. and Forest Drive in Inverness, Citrus County. The community will feature one- and two-bedroom apartments, a clubhouse, clubroom, fitness center, swimming pool, game room, and media center. The project’s planned unit development has already been approved by the city. The Florida Housing Finance Corporation granted preliminary approval for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits on January 30, 2026, triggering a 30-day appeal period that passed without objections.
The city council meeting will take place at 212 W. Main St. in Inverness. City leaders have been working with Green Mills through multiple state funding cycles to advance senior housing on the Forest Drive corridor. Green Mills has previously partnered with Inverness on the Colonnade Park apartment community and built Forest Ridge Senior Residences elsewhere in Citrus County.
Longwood Gardens is expected to launch a six-month window for the developer to close on the project if awarded the tax credits. The city council approved a resolution expressing intent to provide a $340,000 incentive for the project last fall.
