Local Wrestlers Shine at Regionals, Advance to States

On February 27-28, Weeki Wachee High School hosted the FHSAA 1A Region 2 wrestling tournament, where 33 teams from across Florida competed for a spot at the state tournament in Kissimmee from March 5-7. The Hernando High School team finished sixth with 82 points, led by a second-place finish, a third-place finish, and a fourth-place finish. Weeki Wachee High School followed closely in seventh place with 81 points, thanks to a first-place finish, a second-place finish, and other notable placements.

Local teams had a strong showing at the tournament, with Hernando and Weeki Wachee placing inside the top 10. Nature Coast finished 18th with 32 team points and one wrestler earning fourth, while Central High scored 20.5 points for a 21st-place finish and one athlete earning fourth as well. The top five teams at the regionals were Cocoa Beach with 240.5 points, Merritt Island with 172 points, Crystal River with 170.5 points, Space Coast with 84.5 points, and McKeel Academy with 82.5 points.

The following local wrestlers advanced to the state tournament: Contegiacomo from Weeki Wachee took gold, and 13 other local wrestlers will compete at the state tournament. The Leopards will have five athletes (three boys, two girls) wrestling at the state tournament, while the Hornets will have two players compete. Nature Coast and Central will feature one athlete each at Silvers Spurs arena later this week.

The state tournament will take place from March 5-7 at the Silvers Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. Local wrestlers and their teams are preparing for the competition, aiming to bring home top honors.
