A local hunter has been enjoying a successful squirrel hunting season in Hernando County, Florida. The hunter, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been spending time in the woods along the Withlacoochee River, relaxing and taking in the beauty of nature. He has been using a .22lr rimfire rifle and a .410 shotgun to harvest the squirrels.
The hunter reports that the squirrels have been plentiful in almost every spot he has chosen to sit. He has been hunting on private lands, where squirrels can be hunted year-round. In addition to squirrels, he has also been targeting raccoons on his trapline to help protect the local wild turkey population. The raccoons, also known as ringtails, are a major predator of turkey nests and poults.
The hunter notes that the number one squirrel hunting weapon is the .22lr rimfire rifle, but he has also been using a .410 shotgun with 2 ¾” #5 shot to effectively harvest the squirrels. He has been successful in his hunts, harvesting eight squirrels on his last outing, along with a bonus cottontail rabbit.
As the game season comes to a close on local wildlife management areas, hunters are reminded that private lands offer year-round opportunities for squirrel hunting. The hunter encourages others to get out and enjoy the woods, but also to be mindful of the importance of managing the local wildlife population.
