Local Briefs: Scholarships, Free Tax Help, and Community Events

The Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 Military Order of the Purple Heart is offering two scholarship opportunities for local graduating high school seniors. The College of Central Florida (CF) Endowed Scholarship awards $2,000 to a graduating senior accepted or currently enrolled as a full-time student at CF for Academic Year 2026-27. The Sgt. Dennis J. Flanagan Memorial Scholarship also awards $2,000 to a graduating senior accepted as a full-time student at any accredited U.S. college for Academic Year 2026-27. Applications can be obtained at www.citruspurpleheart.org, by contacting school guidance departments, by emailing [email protected], or calling 352-382-3847. Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on March 13.

United Way of Citrus County will offer free tax help through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to eligible Citrus County residents. This service is available to households with an annual income of $96,000 or less. Trained and certified IRS staff will prepare and file federal tax returns accurately and securely at no cost. The program aims to help families receive valuable tax credits they may otherwise miss, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit.

The Citrus County Abuse Shelter Association (CASA) is seeking donations of daily items to keep its pantry stocked. Needed items include household and cleaning supplies, personal care items, and food. Donations can be dropped off at the CASA Outreach office at 1100 E. Turner Camp Road, Inverness, or at Carol’s Interiors and Floors, 6410 S. Suncoast Blvd. in Homosassa. Children are invited to the Read with a Ranger event at the Wildlife Pavilion on Saturday, March 7, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Ranger Rachael will read a nature-themed story, and attendees can ask questions about wildlife.
