Local Athlete Named Best in the World

A Citrus County athlete has achieved the highest honor in their field. On Monday night, at the annual awards ceremony, 18-year-old Emma Johnson from Inverness was named the best in the world in her age group for her outstanding performance in track and field.

Johnson, a senior at Citrus High School, has been training for years to reach this level of excellence. Her hard work and dedication have paid off, as she took home the top prize in the 400-meter hurdles at the recent World Youth Championships, held on July 15, 2022, in Nairobi, Kenya. With a time of 57.18 seconds, Johnson outpaced competitors from around the globe to claim the gold medal.

“This is an incredible feeling, and I’m so grateful to have such a supportive family and team behind me,” Johnson said in a statement. Her coach, Mark Davis, added, “Emma’s achievement is a testament to her tireless work ethic and natural talent. We’re thrilled to see her succeed on the world stage.”

Johnson’s accomplishment has garnered attention from local leaders, with Citrus County Commissioner, Richard Whittington, saying, “We’re proud to have Emma representing Citrus County and Florida on the world stage. Her achievement is an inspiration to us all.”
