Inverness Reconsiders Dispensary Ban Amidst Local Concerns

Inverness, Florida – The city of Inverness is backing away from a proposed ban on medical marijuana dispensaries, following a series of public meetings and concerns from local residents. The issue was brought to the forefront after a recent surge in interest from potential dispensary owners looking to establish businesses in Citrus County.

At a recent meeting, city officials heard from residents and business owners, some of whom expressed concerns about the potential impact of dispensaries on the community. However, others argued that the ban would be an overreach of city authority and could potentially harm local economic development. The city council has decided to revisit its stance on the issue, opting instead to establish regulations and zoning restrictions for dispensaries rather than an outright ban.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, authorities reported finding dozens of animals dead due to neglect at a property in Floral City. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies responded to a tip about animal neglect at a residence on Southeast 10th Avenue in Floral City on January 15, 2026, around 10:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found multiple animals deceased and others in distress. The property owner, 45-year-old Jennifer Johnson of Floral City, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the exact number of animals found dead and the circumstances leading to their neglect. Johnson is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.
