Hernando teachers union, district end impasse with new agreements

The impasse between the Hernando County Teachers Association and the Hernando County school district has ended, with five agreements reached at the March 3 bargaining session.

Among the key provisions: a $470 base salary increase for teachers funded by the state’s Teacher Salary Increase Allocation, a one-time $1,000 bonus for all instructional staff, and performance pay bonuses of $50 for effective and $100 for highly effective ratings. The district also committed an additional $70,000 to cover teachers with more than half a year but less than two years of experience who were not included in the state’s funding designations. A separate agreement adds the juris doctorate to the same pay supplement level as a Ph.D. The $1,000 bonus applies to all instructional staff employed by the district when the bonus is paid out, including first-year staff. It will be prorated based on the number of days on an instructional contract out of a possible 197. Payment is contingent on ratification by the teachers’ association and school board approval, both planned for April.

Two additional memoranda of understanding were also signed. One designates roughly $809,000 in a budget line for instructional staff raises, which will be combined with the state allocation money as a starting point for 2026-27 negotiations. The other protects 15.5 hours during the work year for teachers to receive professional development.

The agreements were reached after negotiations between the Hernando County Teachers Association and the school district. The terms of the agreements will be presented to the school board for approval and to the teachers’ association for ratification, both expected to take place in April.
