Hernando school district, teachers’ union at impasse over compensation

The Hernando Classroom Teachers Association has declared an impasse in negotiations with the Hernando County School District, citing a disagreement over compensation for educators. The union announced the impasse on its website on February 2 and raised the issue at the February 24 Hernando County School Board meeting.

The district is offering a $470 salary increase for all teachers who earned a year of service credit in 2024-25 and a $700 nonrecurring bonus. However, the employee would pay the bonus tax rate, the bonus does not count toward Florida Retirement System calculations, and it applies only to returning employees who earned a year of service credit for 2024-25. The union said the total cost of the district’s proposal would be $1,161,900. The union wants the $470 increase plus a $1,250 one-time salary supplement, taxed as regular income and counting toward Florida Retirement System calculations.

The impasse marks the first time in over a decade that the Hernando Classroom Teachers Association has reached such a point in negotiations with the school district. The union’s efforts to seek a fair settlement that addresses the rising cost of living and increasing educator workloads have not resulted in a mutually agreeable solution.

The Hernando Classroom Teachers Association is seeking support from its members and the community to address the issue. More information can be found on the union’s website.
